With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019, New York State now has the most ambitious emissions targets in the United States. But what do voters in Central New York think about it? What provisions of the draft plan might have greater support?

Join us on Thursday, May 5th at 7 PM online or in-person to learn about the results from the recent Zogby Analytics Poll commissioned by the Levitt Center (Hamilton College) and Upstate Institute (Colgate University) regarding Oneida and Madison County voters’ attitudes, policy stances, and values in relation to these monumental changes in NYS infrastructure, investments, and regulations. The program will include an overview of the CLCPA, the poll, and the results by Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Aaron Strong (Hamilton) and his students, and include a discussion with Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Andy Pattison (Colgate) along with his students regarding the implications of the findings.

Note: In-person attendees are required to provide proof of vaccination and wear masks during the event.

May 3, 6 – 8 PM, Building Sustainable Communities

Building Sustainable Communities Public Event

A collaborative project between Hamilton College Students in ENVST 380 (Community-Engaged Communication) and members of our agricultural community, highlighting sustainable practices that help to grow food, build community, increase resilience, and remain economically viable in a climate-challenged world.

Members of the Hamilton College community are cordially invited to attend this open-house style event that features local agricultural producers who are confronting climate-related vulnerabilities, including extreme weather and flooding events, economic stresses, GHG emissions, and injustice. Efforts are technically sophisticated, communally engaged, and ethically reflective, and help expand our sense of sustainability and community. The event is being held at the Kirkland Art Center (9 1/2 East Park Row, Clinton), from 6-8pm, on Tuesday, May 3rd.

The stories you’ll hear about our community partners are action-oriented, focusing on what our neighbors are currently doing, and what we can help them do, to foster a more resilient local community.

Our community partners include: Aeschlimann’s Dairy, Troy BishoppJones Family FarmMosher FarmsRestore Forward (Black Women’s Blueprint), and Szarek Greenhouses. Keeping Warm with Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps in Utica (Virtual Tour)

(The virtual tour was recorded. You can watch it here on YouTube.)

February 27, 2022 @ 2:00 pm-3:00 pm EST

Sponsored by HeatSmart CNY and HeatSmart Mohawk Valley

Join Maggie & John Reilly of New York Mills as they give a virtual tour of their whole house heat pump system and solar PV array! Listen first hand to their path to not only clean heating and cooling but also how they transitioned off fossil fuels to clean energy/renewables. They have made a concerted effort to move away from fossil fuels by also using an air source heat pump hot water heater, charging their electric vehicle, and using battery powered landscape equipment, including a lawn mower, chainsaw, and hedge trimmer.

The virtual tour will start with a brief introduction about the campaign and available rebates and grants, and feature an overview of the locally-installed heat pump system, with the owners discussing the system, their motivations, and results. The installers will be present to discuss technical aspects of the system. This is an interactive event, please ask questions! Co-sponsored by HeatSmart CNY and HeatSmart Mohawk Valley.

June 13: Electrify Cruise In

In conjunction with the Clinton Fire Department’s “Annual Cruise In” for classic cars, the Climate Smart Communities Task Force sponsored a display of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It was held on June 13th at the Clinton Central School grounds. About a dozen cars were on display (out of the show’s total of approximately 200 cars).

From our earlier press release: “The electric car contingent at the Cruise In will give visitors a chance to see a variety of electric cars up close and talk to electric car owners. The CSC Task Force will also have information available on the environmental benefits and economics of electric car ownership and the availability of charging stations.”

For potential electric or hybrid auto purchasers, check out this page of resources.
