CLIMATE SMART COMMUNITIES ELECTRIFY 2022 CRUISE IN

The Kirkland-Clinton Climate Smart Communities (CSC) Task Force will participate in the Clinton Fire Department’s Annual Cruise In. Again this year, the Task Force is organizing a contingent of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to be shown alongside the classic cars that are typically part of this annual car show. The Cruise In will be held at the Clinton Central School campus on Sunday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Electric cars are becoming an increasingly common sight in New York State. Although still a small fraction of the overall car market, the share of electric vehicles sold every year is rapidly rising. This share will continue to grow since New York law now mandates that all new passenger cars sold within the state by 2035 will be required to be fully electric.

“Bringing electric cars to the annual Cruise In is part of the task force’s efforts to engage and educate the community regarding climate change mitigation,” said Sally Carman, a member of the task force. “We are grateful to Clinton Fire Department for welcoming our participation in this annual event that so many people enjoy.”

Transportation is the second-largest source of climate change-inducing greenhouse gases in the New York State (behind only housing), accounting for about 28% of total emissions. The switch to electric vehicles will reduce these emissions dramatically, along with the particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide that come with traditional vehicles and are damaging to human health. Federal and state tax refunds support the purchase of electric cars and reduced fuel and maintenance costs helping to make ownership affordable.

The electric car section at the Cruise In will give visitors a chance to see a variety of electric cars up close and talk to electric car owners. The CSC Task Force will also have information available on the environmental benefits and economics of electric car ownership and the availability of charging stations. Details on the Clinton Fire Department Annual Cruise In event are available on the Clinton Fire Department Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ClintonNYFD).
