Clinton/Kirkland Climate Smart Task Force Initiates Survey and Pilot Project on Food Waste
The Clinton/Kirkland Climate Smart Task Force, whose purpose is to advise and assist the Village of Clinton and Town of Kirkland as they work to respond to climate change, has sent all Village residents a survey to gauge their interest in changing how they dispose of food waste. The Task Force hopes to start a project in the next few months in which 50 households in the Village will begin separating their food waste from the rest of their garbage. The food waste will be picked up separately and delivered to Oneida County’s anaerobic digester, where it will be converted into clean energy. Food waste in landfills, where it otherwise would go, releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The new method of food waste disposal would reduce the methane produced at the Oneida-Herkimer landfill and instead produce clean energy. As we succeed at reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, the Village and Town will be eligible for state grants to expand the process in future years.
If you received one of the surveys, please return it in the return envelope by May 1, or as soon after that as possible. The Task Force hopes to begin the project over the summer, once we have identified residents who are interested in participating. If residents have questions or did not receive a survey please contact Sally Carman at 315-853-5459 or Mona Perrotti at 315-853-2343.
